Sound distortion in Ubuntu
This entry is more of a running notebook than an informative post intended for others.
Occasionally, sound in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) gets heavily distorted: there is severe reverb and voices come out robotic and alien-like to the point of incomprehensibility . When this happens I inevitably try several things until sound returns to normal. But since I have not systematically recorded what I've tried, I still have no known reliable cure.
Just now it occurred when I began viewing a Flash video on Pokertube.com. This time, my sequence was:
- Exit Firefox properly (File -> Quit)
- ps, notice run-mozilla.sh is still running (also so is Thunderbird)
- Exit Thunderbird properly
- ps, no more mozilla
- Open an mp3 in vlc, see that sound is fine.
- Open Firefox again, pull up video, sound is fine.
By themselves, these steps will look random, I know. I won't explain here though.
